Newsletter - March 2003

From the President-Cindy Bennett, WICT RM 2003 President
Happy Spring!

How great it is to shed the dark, cold days of winter for "Springtime in the Rockies." While the coming months are likely to throw us a few unpleasant surprises, it's nice to have some certainties, such as Adelphia's move to Denver, and Level 3's wonderful support, beginning with the recent Work/Life Balance event at their Broomfield offices, brightening our outlook.

If spring fever is already setting in, and you're finding an incredible urge to get out of your home or office, check our "upcoming events calendar for some great destinations. We've been getting fabulous feedback from these luncheon sessions and are very grateful to the Rocky Mountain areas "wonder women" for sharing their time and wisdom with us.

And, speaking of wonder women, thank you for your nominations for this year's Walk of Fame Gala honorees. A great event is planned for May 6th and, as Gloria's update for the newsletter indicates, it's not too late to get your company more involved with a sponsorship and table reservation.

In May, we'll also sow the seeds for a new harvest of mentees. Our thanks to the many women who have volunteered to serve as mentors for this year's crop, who are very excited about the great harvest they'll enjoy as a result of your professional nurturing.

Cindy Bennet

2003 WICT-RM Mentoring Program
"In keeping with our mission, 'WICT develops women leaders that transform our industry,' the Mentoring Program is an excellent example of the benefits of WICT membership. This is a terrific program that involves and provides benefits to all levels within our membership," Marianne Hayes, Executive Director, AT&T Broadband and 2002 RM-WICT President.

Registration opens later this week for the 2003 WICT-RM Mentoring Program, which begins in May. Mentors come from various organizational levels and interests to encourage participation and diversity. Teams of 1 mentor to 2-3 mentees will meet face-to-face at least monthly, with interim one-on-one meetings as needed and will run from May through November 2003. The cost of the program is $275 which includes the initial training and support tools and is often paid by employers who recognize the tremendous value that mentees bring back to their companies. .

To apply for the 2003 program, please look for applications on the website (http://www.wictrm.org) beginning March 31 or at the upcoming WICT events. The applications will be process commences on March 31 and ends on April 30.

“As a mentor in this pilot program I was pleasantly surprised by the value I derived from my interactions with my mentee team. Their insight and interest in continuously evaluating their styles and direction was truly inspirational.” Nancy McGee, mentor and former Sr. VP Marketing at AT&T Broadband.

Experiencing the Real Value of WICT Cindy Miller

We'll be providing some background information about your 2003 WICT Rocky Mountain Chapter officers in upcoming issues of your WICT-RM newsletter. And what better place to start than the top and your new President, Cindy Bennett.

I recently was offered the opportunity within my small (male dominated) technology company to move from a senior sales director into a newly created corporate position in strategic planning. This is a "lateral" move as well as an upward move - a great double step! It's also important to note that the company's senior executives sought me out for this position - I did not go looking for the job.

I know that my experience as a WICT member, volunteer and board member contributed directly to my getting this opportunity, and my ability to perform well in this new role. It's not that my company specifically recognized that I've been a WICT member all these years. It's the fact that I have been able to develop my leadership skills and they have noticed THAT.

Through WICT, I have improved my communications skills, leadership and management skills, and my understanding of what really makes people successful. I have learned a lot about responding to difficult situations, about motivating others and about how to make my own accomplishments more visible to others. My WICT experience also provided me with a network of women whom I admire, that I can go to when I have to make big decisions (like this recent career move!) and who provide me with some great advice and encouragement.

WICT provides an environment where you can learn from others, where you can practice new leadership skills or further enhance those you already have, and gain a support network outside your own company.

WICT membership is a great value, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of it by participating in programs and especially by volunteering on one of our program committees or serving on our Board. The rewards you get will be well beyond the investment made. It's certainly been true for me!

So we'd love to provide a greater opportunity for sharing some of your wisdom beginning with the April issue. Please send us an example where being drenched by some adversity has enabled you to grow and blossom.
