February - short on days long on deeds
It's February already. And while Punxsutawney Phil recommends hibernating for another six weeks, we've got too much WICT news to tell you about to wait another day!
We hope that you are finding these monthly updates helpful. Please let us know if you have any suggestions or news that you'd like to pass along , especially for our "Movers and Shakers" and Member Profile sections.
Remember to celebrate Black History this month!
From the President-Cindy Bennett, WICT RM 2003 President
Dear WICT Members-- It is hard to believe a month has passed and it's newsletter time again, but what a great month it has been! Welcome to Denver Adelphia! Congratulations to Level 3 Communications on their recent acquisition of Genuity! What a delight it is to have this positive momentum in our neck of the woods.
WICT RM is also gaining momentum! We have a new newsletter format, great programs on the calendar, more and more buy in from senior executives in the industry and are expanding our geographical reach up through the northern corridor! Please join me in extending a warm welcome to the WICT family’s newest members: the leadership and employees of Level 3 Communications! We are excited to be partnering with this thriving organization.
Thanks to Meg Porfido and Diane Zile, Level 3 has graciously offered to host a breakfast for all WICT members and guests on March 11th from 7:30-9:30. The topic will be "Work/ Life Balance" and panelists will include Linda Adams, Group Vice President (highest ranking woman at Level 3) and Nancy Carmichael Murphy, President of WICT's National Board and Karen Niparko, VP of Business Ops for McData!
A WICT-RM Thank You to Shannon Saviers, Donna Miller, and Juliet Randall for attending WICT's recent Leadership Conference with me in Atlanta! The conference was a big success, boasting record attendance and participation from all 23 Chapters! Shannon and Donna did a fabulous job presenting the RM Mentoring program to the group. We are grateful to them for creating this valuable program that will now be available to WICT members nationwide. Juliet and I spent our time soaking up the brilliant ideas of our comrades and making new friends.
Congratulations to the 2002 WICT RM Board! We brought home a Pinnacle Award for their tireless efforts as well as recognition for contributing to the WICT foundation!
There are lots of ways to be involved in WICT! Come to programs (we offer more than any other Chapter!), volunteer for a one-time project or an ongoing responsibility (see list below). Spend a few minutes or a few hours a month. Your investment will be well rewarded! To find out more about how to participate, contact Mimi Schaefer (CAZ80111@aol.com).
As always, please feel free to contact me with brilliant ideas, words of wisdom, questions and concerns!

Featured Article for February:
Great Customer Service - Anachronism or Growth Strategy?
Cable systems don't appear to run their customer service standards spots quite so often anymore. And there seem to be fewer management articles extolling customer service these days. In contrast, Qwest has launched a campaign underscoring the multigenerational tradition of its commitment to serving the customer. Are they onto something or just grasping at worn-out cliché's?
A recent article from Jean Duane, vice president of WICT- RM's Board of Directors and principal of Strategic Projects, LLC, provides a very compelling answer. Find out the facts concerning the value of listening to your customers and making sure that more of your "just satisfied" customers become "very satisfied" with your product or service. For example, retaining just five percent more of your customers can result in increasing your profits by as much as 100%.
WICTAccepts Pinnacle Award:
From the WICT Leadership Conference (left to right): WICT-RM President Cindy Bennett, Donna Miller, Mentoring Chairman, Juliet Randall, Program Chair, and Shannon Saviers, Mentoring Co-Chair were on hand to accept WICT's Pinnacle Award on behalf of the 2002 RM WICT Leadership. We were selected for this prestigious national award in recognition of our stated business plan. Donna and Shannon were asked to present our pioneering efforts on the Rocky Mountain WICT Mentoring Program, which will be rolled out to the 22 WICT Chapters across the country in 2003.
