She is a mentor to her five direct reports, and throughout her life has been a mentor for friends and family members, most particularly for career-minded young women.

For her, the most important skill as a mentor is the ability to influence gracefully and respectfully, but with strength and fortitude. Her leadership philosophy focuses on leading by actions, and aligning her communications with those actions. Core values for Stephanie include leading with honesty, having integrity, and making a difference. Stephanie’s many strengths include intuition, judgment, discernment, and balancing work and family.

Stephanie is particularly interested in mentoring younger women in the Westminster – Boulder area who are highly motivated and have potential. Her preference is to mentor women in companies other than Raindance and companies that compete with Raindance. She would like to mentor on the subjects of Growing as a Leader (Leadership Development), Balancing Work and Life and Entrepreneurship. This position involves consulting, coaching, facilitating and training. She has twenty-four years of experience in those kinds of roles, including extensive experience directing and managing her teams to focus on successfully supporting strategic and tactical corporate initiatives, as well as coaching executives and their teams in planning and implementing new strategic directions in alignment with their companies’ business goals and objectives. Joanne’s expertise spans the telecommunications, hi-tech, manufacturing, service, mining, biomedical, and oil & gas industries, and experience with non-profits.

Her experience and expertise in those areas were established through her work for Qwest Communications--Consumer Organization; McData Corporation; Exabyte Corporation; and Sprint PCS. For several years, Joanne was also the Founder and Principal of Joanne Cohen Associates, a consulting firm that offered results-driven services to meet the unique culture and specific needs of client organizations.

Joanne has a B.S. (Education and English) from State University of New York, and an M.A. (Speech Communication) from University of Denver. She was President of the American Society for Training and Development, Rocky Mountain Chapter (RMC-ASTD), and has been affiliated with the Women’s Vision Foundation in Denver.

Joanne believes strongly in supporting other women, helping them believe in themselves and what they have to offer, and encouraging self-empowerment, transformation and growth. She has had many mentoring/coaching roles working with many women, starting as a Big Sister in the 1970’s, and continuing throughout her career and as President of RMC-ASTD.

Key skills and attributes for a mentor include exemplary listening skills; ability to ask probing questions; caring and compassion for people; a belief in people and their abilities; leadership; telling the truth with compassion; nurturing; respecting differences; resolving conflicts directly; being a role-model; seeing the best in others; maintaining the highest integrity; interpersonal communication skills; and having the ability to lighten up. Joanne believes in and practices those qualities and characteristics on a daily basis and believes in being “of service.”

For Joanne, leadership is taking personal responsibility for everything we think, say and do. (a quote from Introspect International’s “The Mindset of Leadership.”) She believes we are all leaders, regardless of our titles. An effective leader builds trust, credibility and respect; honors commitments; “takes a stand and lives a stand;” holds him/herself accountable; walks the walk and walks the talk (actions speak louder than words); and lives his/her life as a leader—is a model. A leader leads individuals and teams, believes in open and honest communication, and has a shared vision.

Joanne’s core values are Integrity/truth, Acceptance, Gratitude, Striving for Excellence, Compassion, Commitment, Personal Mastery, Honoring one another and our differences, Respect, Loyalty, Freedom, Friendship, Accountability, and adding value and making a difference—being of service. According to her prior mentees, among Joanne’s strengths are communication and listening skills, problem-solving, dedication, being highly ethical, truthful, a good role model, good humanitarian who likes to give back to others, and a team-player; excelling in partnership, give and take, leading and following, staying the course when she knows it is right in the face of difficulty; staying true to principles. She sees the importance of giving back and being of service, and is able to lead someone to get to their next step.

She would most enjoy mentoring people in the same functional area, individuals with specific goals, individuals who want to grow into a higher level management position (e.g., a Supervisor or Manager who sets goals to be a Director), and people with potential who are willing to invest in themselves. She is interested in mentoring on the topics of Growing as a Leader (Leadership Development), Balancing Work and Life, and Acting as a Sounding Board. Her preferred location is in the Centennial/DTC area, and most convenient times are 7 – 9 am, lunchtime, or 4:30 – 6:30 T-Th.
