So You Want to be a Tweeter?

By: Stephanie Howell

TwitterSocial media continues to make strides, even becoming a legitimate corporate strategy for the year.  Need proof?  Pepsi announced that they wouldn't pay for a commercial in this year's Super Bowl for the first time in 23 years.  Instead, the cola company decided to put its efforts towards a social media introduction of its 'Pepsi Refresh' initiative.  Instead of spending millions of dollars for a commercial seen by more than 100 MILLION viewers, Pepsi decided social media would be a smarter choice to focus its efforts.

And they're not alone.  Corporations and businesses are jumping on the Social Media train.  GM, Comcast, HBO, Amazon, Zappos, Whole Foods-they're all on Twitter and Facebook, controlling their messages and serving their customers immediately.

By now, you should realize that social media should have a seat at the table.  In December's WICT newsletter, you learned about the don'ts of social media-now, here are some do's to get you started, both from a personal and professional standpoint.

You Are What You Wear

By: Aja Logan

Work_WearIt may not be fair, but we're often judged by our appearance and our wardrobe.  Unfortunately, this seems to be even truer for women. How your clothes look, fit and are put together can mean the difference between a second chance and being blown off.  For instance, two women purchase the same white blouse from the same store.  One buys a size that fits her perfectly.  The other woman however, buys the blouse two sizes off, doesn't properly iron it and doesn't have it styled correctly.  They may not realize it, but both women are communicating to everyone they encounter without uttering a word.  The woman wearing the white blouse that fits properly could be read by others as taking pride in her appearance because she is serious, determined, aware and focused.

If she takes pride in her appearance, it can easily be assumed she will put her "best foot forward" in most everything she does.  On the other hand, the woman with ill-fitting clothing may unfortunately be read as sloppy, lacking interest in her job and may be overlooked in the workplace and social scene.  This year, each edition of the newsletter will bring you helpful tips and ideas on workplace attire, and how to put your best foot forward.

The truth often lies between two different perspectives. Wise leaders know not to take sides, but rather listen, understand and reflect on how people can be aligned before taking action. The real challenge is accomplishing all this in a matter of minutes.
