Q1 2011 Rocky Talk
As I took over as President of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of WICT this year, I have to admit I was a little anxious. So many incredible women have held this position before me and have done amazing things with the chapter. I was concerned that with my professional obligations and my home life, I would have a difficult time managing and steering this chapter properly. But, I took a breath and decided to fully jump in and I committed to making it work.
As the transition meetings began, I was reminded of how many wonderful women are on the board and committees, and I realized there was no way this chapter would not thrive with this type of talent driving the chapter. We talk so often about surrounding yourself with the best people possible, and to learn from them and to embrace change and risks. And I realized that's what we've done for our Chapter; we have tapped into some of the best talent around and have asked them to come together and help lead our chapter into the future.
We also often talk about taking risks; that without taking smart and calculated risks there are no rewards and you cannot hope to grow and evolve to our full potential. You'll hear Cynthia Carpenter alluding to risks in her interview in this newsletter, and how they helped get her to where she is now. By being fearless, fully embracing change, and being confident enough in yourself to jump in fully, you can be rewarded tenfold.
Those of you who know me, know I could talk for hours on taking risks and weight your anxiety against potential rewards, but at our annual Walk of Fame event on May 12, you'll hear from 11 extraordinary WICT members who have proven that being fearless leads to incredible opportunities. Make sure you join us at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center as we hear from them directly about how they've maneuvered the many obstacles one encounters over their career.
Change is scary, and putting yourself out there on your own can be nerve-wracking, but with a network of supportive and inspiring colleagues, friends and peers, nothing is insurmountable. I hope you find some of your support system in the WICT Rocky Mountain Chapter, and I look forward to connecting with each of you through these newsletters and at events like the Walk of Fame, or a programming event like the Communicating Brand YOU event, the Rocky Mountain Leadership Institute or any of the other multitude of events and programs we'll host in the upcoming months.
